Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is there an audition fee?

    • Yes, it is $45. We accept cash, card, or check. Checks should be made payable to "Associated Students" and please write "Aztec Winter Guard" in the memo section of the check.

    • If you are submitting a video audition, you will be sent a link to pay the audition fee online.

  • Do I have to be a San Diego State University student to join?

    • No, everyone is welcome :)

  • Is there an age limit?

    • There is no age limit for the fall guard.

    • For the winter guard, we must adhere to the WGI policy as stated below:

      • Independent Open Class color guards from the United States may utilize performers not over 23 years of age as of 12:01 a.m. on April 1st of any given year.

  • What if I can't attend auditions but still want to try out for the guard?

    • Information for Video Auditions will be posted to this website on Saturday, May 19 in the evening. Please check under the Auditions tab on that day. All video submissions are due no later than midnight on Sunday, May 27, 2018.

  • What group is the audition for?

    • The audition is for all groups - Fall 2018 Marching Aztecs Color Guard and the 2018-2019 Aztec Open Winter Guard. You will be able to specify which guard(s) you are auditioning for.

  • When will I know if I made the team?

    • You will receive an email on or before June 1 with your audition results.

  • Can I attend the auditions just to spin even though I'm not actually auditioning?

    • Auditions are for those that are interested in marching only. You may attend one of our clinics if you just wish to spin with us instead.

  • What do I wear for auditions?

    • Form fitting all black rehearsal/dance attire. Dance, jazz, ballet shoes or barefoot is preferred to athletic shoes. Hair must be pulled back and out of the face in a ponytail or bun.

  • Can I bring a guest to watch me audition?

    • This is a closed audition. Guests must stay in the lobby outside the gym.

  • Will there be any food provided?

    • No, but there are plenty of fast restaurants and markets around the campus available and in walking distance for lunch. There is a water fountain outside the gym to refill water bottles. Breaks will be given throughout the day in addition to a 1 hour lunch break.

  • Who will be teaching/judging the auditions?

    • Members of the SDSU fall and winter guard staff as well as some of our clinicians.

  • What should I bring with me?

    • Completed and signed Participation Waiver (must be signed by a parent/guardian if you are under 18)

    • $40 Audition Fee

    • Equipment if you have your own

    • Water bottle/snacks

    • Lunch or money for lunch

    • $10 for a parking permit if you choose to park in the structure (P7). There is street parking available.

    • A great attitude and willingness to learn ;)
